“Sarah has seemingly boundless energy and enthusiasm, which was very supportive in this down seller's market. She took me around and showed me several similar houses in the neighborhood and encouraged me to make some dramatic changes in my house in order to give it the curb appeal to compete in the local market and bring a good price. Being an old curmudgeon, and a man, I thought some of the improvements to appearance were superficial, but I trusted her view of the house-buying process and did most of them. Good thing, because I had not understood how much the sale would depend upon the house appealing to the woman in the purchasing couple. I'm not sure whether we made back the hoped for double of what the improvements cost, but we at least covered them with the increase in sale price. The most important thing that in this market, where some houses were sitting on the market for extended periods, their appeal quickly going stale as the cost of selling spiraled, we had our offer within about two weeks after the house was first shown. That was entirely due to Sarah's marketing instincts. We had a closing within six weeks of the acceptance. I'm used to being in control of all aspects of my life, and demure, sweet-looking Sarah is an unabashedly assertive woman, so there were times when we engaged in a contest of wills. Yet most of the time I had the good sense to give in to the advice of the expert I had hired and in the end she got me a better result than one could have hoped for in these difficult economic times.
